A 20 years newly married female presents with dysuria, frequency of micturation, lower abdominal pain and blood in urine 5 days after marriage.
What is the diagnosis in your mind?
Honeymoon cystitis (UTI)
What key questions would you ask?
Burning or scalding sensation during micturition
Increased frequency of micturition
Lower abdominal pain or discomfort
Red coloured urine or fresh blood in urine (Haematuria may occur in cystitis in women)
What will you examine?
Examination reveals extreme suprapubic tenderness.
Investigations-
Urine for R/M/E- presence of pus cells and RBC
Other essential investigations- MSU (midstream urine) for culture and sensitivity (usually not available in primary and secondary level)
Treatment-
Ciprofloxacin- 500 mg every 12 hours orally for 03 days
Or
Ofloxacin- 200 mg every 12 hours orally for 03 days
Plenty of fluid by mouth
- Honeymoon cystitis is a common problem in newly married young women because of urethral and periurethral trauma during sexual intercourse.
